Francis Ashby, a senior Oxford don on holiday alone in the Alps, encounters American Caroline and Elinor, her adopted Irish-American daughter. Ashby enjoys their company, especially Elinor's, and they both like him. When they arrive unannounced in Oxford, he's surprised. Women are banned from the College grounds and rooms.
