Dodes'ka-den
Akira Kurosawa's film, which is at once tragic and transcendent, chronicles the daily lives of a group of people who are just scraping by in a slum on the outskirts of Tokyo. Despite their bleak circumstances, everyone of them—the homeless father and son daydreaming about their dream house; the young woman molested by her uncle; the youngster who imagines himself as a trolley conductor—finds reasons to continue on in spite of their circumstances. Dodes'ka-den, one of Kurosawa's most memorable films, was made during a period of turmoil in his life. And here, his beautifully filmed debut color film, puts all of his hopes, concerns, and artistic enthusiasm on full show.
