Twenty years following Third Effect, Shinji Ikari awakens. He hasn't aged. Much of Earth is set in ruins, NERV has been dismantled, and those who once protected have turned him against him. Befriending the enigmatic Kaworu Nagisa, Shinji continues the struggle from the angels and also understands that the fighting is far from over, even if it might possibly be contrary to his former allies. The characters' struggles continue amidst the conflicts against the angels and one another, from that which might necessarily be the ending of the world spiraling down.
