Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors
In a village in the Carpathians, Ivan falls in love with Marichka, who is the daughter of the man who killed his father. When something bad happens to her, he is sad for months. Eventually, he marries Palagna and gets back to the busy life around him. She wants kids, but he can't stop thinking about the girl he used to love. Palagna tries sorcery to get Ivan's attention again. In the process, he falls under the sorcerer's spell, which makes Ivan look bad in public. Ivan then fights the sorcerer. Ivan's tragedy is balanced by the busy rhythms of village life, like work and holidays, the pomp and celebration of weddings and funerals, the changing of the seasons, and the beauty of nature.
