The Battle of the River Plate
During World War II's early years, the Royal Navy fought a losing battle to keep the Atlantic convoy routes open and the British Isles supplied. Numerous surface/commerce raiders had snuck out of German waters just before the declaration of war, posing a serious threat. They were primarily used to target and sink commercial ships, and they could and did strike anywhere. They were supplied by axis cargo ships or tankers. This is the account of one of these ships, the 'Admiral Graf Spee,' and how three lightly armed Royal Navy cruisers armed with only 6 and 8 inch guns bravely took on this fearsome 'pocket battleship' armed with 11 inch cannons.
