The Profession of Arms
The Emperor, Charles V, sends his German landsknechts, led by Georg von Frundsberg, to march towards Rome in the autumn of 1526. In the midst of a harsh winter, the inferior papal armies led by Giovanni de'Medici attempt to pursue them. Despite this, the Imperial armies are able to cross rivers and obtain cannons thanks to the maneuvering of its Lords. Giovanni de'Medici is wounded in the leg by a falconet shot during a skirmish. Attempts to cure him are futile, and he dies. The Imperial armies launch an assault on Rome. The film is beautifully but unassumingly set, depicting the harsh conditions of war and its lack of glory. It concludes simply with the declaration made by the commanders of European armies after the death of Giovanni de'Medici not to use fire weapons again due to their cruelty.
