Laura Brummels is hell-bent on avenging the death of a young kid, a death she could have avoided but chose not to. Her involvement as a reporter with a political system that has effectively corrupted her has landed her in a jail of guilt. Laura is sentenced to Aquila after falling out of favor with the dictatorship. No one is allowed to leave, and an annual monsoon floods the prison, killing everyone. And she realizes she has a chance to atone for her actions: one of the notorious guards is the assassin of the young kid. This is her chance to revenge the boy's death while also absolving herself of her guilt. But there's a surprise waiting for her in the huge cell where she'll be held: another prisoner, Joseph, has survived the previous flood and has been planning his escape from Aquila before the new one arrives. He's come up with a creative way to remove stones from the prison ceiling, but he can't do it by himself. To succeed, he must persuade his new cell mate to forego murder in favor of surviving and escaping with him.
