Deacons for Defense
It is set in1965, not long after the enactment of the Civil Rights Act and is based on a factual story, according to the producers. Despite the Act, African-American citizens of Bogalusa continue to be treated as second-class citizens, with their fundamental rights as human beings routinely violated by the white power structure in general and the local chapter of the Ku Klux Klan in particular, according to the report. After the struggles become too overwhelming, the story follows the formation of a group of local black men, particularly ex-war veterans, who form "Deacons for Defense," an all-black defense group dedicated to patrolling the black section of town and protecting its residents from the more violent aspects of "white backlash."
