Double Suicide of Sonezaki

In Japan, suicide has traditionally been a means of social protest. The advent of a new merchant class transforms samurai society in this film set in 1703. Some unscrupulous persons took advantage of these developments before the social order was re-created, and some elements of the social compact are beginning to unravel. An I.O.U. is given to a clerk instead of wages in this scenario. When the destitute clerk gives the paper to the merchant for payment at the agreed-upon time, the merchant becomes enraged and claims the clerk never wrote it and is attempting to scam him. He then orders his thugs to beat up on the cashier.
