Ésimésac
Ésimésac urges the residents of Saint-Élie-de-Caxton, who barely have enough food to subsist, to work on a community garden. By cultivating the land together, each person will increase their output. Simultaneously, talk of a new railroad line promises to connect Saint-Élie-de-Caxton to the rest of the world and inspires optimism for prosperity. Riopel, the gigantic blacksmith, begins work on the railroad track and persuades the townspeople to invest in his endeavor rather than waste time playing in the garden. The huge undertaking of Ésimésac flounders under the weight of metal. However, can he truly halt progress?
