Harlan County U.S.A.
In June 1973, coal miners at the Eastover Mining Company's Brookside Mine in Harlan County, Kentucky, went on strike. The reluctance of Eastover to sign a contract (after the miners joined the United Mine Workers of America) led to a strike that lasted more than a year and included violent clashes between gun-toting company thugs/scabs and picketing miners and their female supporters. Director Barbara Kopple puts the strike in context by providing some background on the miners' suffering and the UMWA's history.
