In India, men began to capture and tame elephants for battle, parades, and religion 5,000 years ago. Even today, the little Makbul grows up in daily touch with the farmed and wild elephants that inhabit the forest surrounding his place of origin in southern India. Makbul, against his mother's protests, follows in the footsteps of his father and grandfather, venturing deep into the forest to master the age-old profession of the mahout, or government-employed elephant handler. When an elephant calf named Vikrama is born, Makbul is responsible for its care.
