I Am Slave
Abducted from her village in the Nubar Mountains by pro-government Arab militia and sold into slavery by a woman in Khartoum for touching her own daughter at age twelve, Malia (the daughter of champion wrestler Bah) is the subject of the novel by Mende Nazer whose real-life experiences are depicted in the film. After six years in captivity, she is brought to London, where her name is changed, but her awful lot in life goes on. In order to keep her from going to the authorities, she has had her passport confiscated. There appears to be hope for her and Bah's reunion in Sudan, though, when she meets someone who appears to be sympathetic. In spite of the film's positivity, the film's end title indicates that roughly 5,000 "slave" employees are currently employed in the United Kingdom.
