Institute Benjamenta, or This Dream People Call Human Life
Jakob enrolls in the Benjamenta Institute (managed by Johannes and Lisa Benjamenta, brother and sister) to study how to be a servant. He studies bizarre lessons of movement, drawing circles, and servility with seven other guys under Lisa. He requests a larger room. No additional pupils show up, and none leave for work. Johannes is dissatisfied, tyrannical, and disengaged from the school's operations. Lisa is stunning, at first restrained, then on the point of a nervous collapse. There's a hint of incest in the air. Jakob is drawn to Lisa, and she, in turn, may be pulled to him. She goes into a coma as winter approaches. Things worsen; Johannes observes that all of this has occurred since Jakob arrived. Is there a connection between cause and effect?
