It Was a Faint Dream

The story is set in 13th-century Kyoto, when the Imperial court is ruled by the clergy. Shijo was a poor woman who was sold as a concubine to a powerful daima. She begins an affair with a State Councillor who is also the brother of a retired Emperor since she is bored with her life in isolation. She becomes a nun and traverses the country after realizing she is nothing more than a courtesan's plaything.
