Little Miss Marker
Steve Halloway, owner of the Horseshoe Cabaret in New York City, where Bangles Carson performs, is starving for cash. Bookies such as Sorrowful Jones will each pay him $1,000 if Dream Prince loses his racehorse. In the middle of the bets being put at the window, Sorrowful comes across a gambler who wants to bet $20 but has already lost $500. A "marker" or "security" for Marthy Jane (Shirley Temple) is instead placed by her father. He takes his own life after losing his bet and left "little Miss Marker" in the care of Sorrowful Jones. Sorrowful is entrusted with Bangles' care while Steve is in Chicago, where he is avoiding scrutiny for his fraudulent bets. Sorrowful's involvement with Bangles prompts Big Steve to return to New York to take action.
