Man of La Mancha
Miguel de Cervantes, a poet, dramatist, and occasional actor, was taken into custody by the Spanish Inquisition in the sixteenth century together with his manservant. They were charged with heresy and sentenced to exile. They are accused of putting on an entertainment show that the Inquisition found to be insulting. Inside of the enormous dungeon that they have been imprisoned into, the other convicts band together against Cervantes and his manservant and initiate a sham trial with the purpose of stealing or torching his belongings. Cervantes has a frantic desire to save a manuscript that he is carrying with him, so he creates an unconventional defense involving the other inmates, complete with costumes, make-up, and the story of Don Quixote.
