Mr. Jones
A railway journey from Moscow to the Ukrainian city of Kharkov in March 1933 brings Welsh journalist Gareth Jones. It is during this voyage, which begins with his disembarking from his ship at an unassuming train station, that he will come face to face with the devastation caused by a famine. Everyone he meets is a Soviet spy who is determined to keep the general public in the dark about the disaster. There are dead people around. Strictly enforced agricultural collectivization by Stalin has led in anarchy and devastation. In the wake of Walter Duranty's Pulitzer Prize-winning pro-Stalin journalism, Jones was able to communicate the terrible news in the West with the help of New York Times reporter Ada Brooks.
