Original Cast Album: Company
The musical "Company" by Stephen Sondheim debuted on Broadway in the spring of 1970, and according to custom, the cast recording is made on the first Sunday following opening night. The now-legendary documentarian D.A. Pennebaker documented the preparation of the original cast recording, the interaction between Sondheim and the actors, and the dynamics of attempting to record a live performance. Elaine Stritch's performance of "The Ladies Who Lunch" serves as the film's climax. The musical received six Tony Awards, including "Best Musical," and performed on Broadway for two years. The plan to create a series of films titled "Original Cast Album" never materialized.
