Safety to Nome
Every February, four dozen athletes are invited to Alaska to embark on a trip that will test their bodies and brains, their wills to achieve and their wills to survive. To compete in the Iditarod Trail Invitational, athletes must traverse 1000 miles of Alaskan tundra on foot or by bicycle, or on snowshoes or cross-country skis. Overnighters are more likely to reach the summit of Everest than bicyclists are to from Anchorage to Nome in a day. Twenty-six people will tackle the complete 1000 miles of the Iditarod Trail this year. There is a 12-day record for the fastest time ever. The longest is at least 30 minutes. This event is one of the world's most perilous because of the unknowns that draw the world's best competitors here year after year in quest of meaning and thrill. How willing are you to give up your toes, hands, or someone you care about. If you're not well-prepared on the Iditarod Trail, this is what will happen to you.
