The Cigarette
LA CIGARETTE, Dulac's first film, is about a liberated young lady and her older husband, who thinks she's having an affair, and it speaks to a true postwar masculinity crisis in France. Dulac mixes realistic tendencies with impressionistic visual association through cinematic-specific techniques, editing, and more, creating tension between modernity/antiquity, life/death, and masculinity/femininity through understated acting and location photography.
