The Only
The Only is a biography of Briana Scurry, a goalkeeper inducted into the U.S. Soccer Hall of Fame, that focuses on her greatest victories and saddest tragedies. The documentary investigates the inspirational splendor and profoundly dark corners of a Hall of Fame goalie who stood alone on the field as the only African-American starter and the only openly gay player. While celebrating the historic legacy of Scurry's career, which included two Olympic gold medals and a penalty save that helped the U.S. win the 1999 Women's World Cup, the film also tells the story of how she overcame racism and homophobia at the time of her greatest triumphs, only to be on the brink of suicide after a career-ending concussion.
