The Orphanage
A Bollywood-inspired historical drama with a dash of Bollywood. The city of Kabul in the early 1990's. The country is ruled by Soviet ideals. It is acceptable for women to wear miniskirts, children to attend school, and the general public to attend the movie theater, concerts, and colleges and universities. Life in Afghanistan is very much like life in the West, and it's not that different. Kabul street vendor Qodrat, 14, makes a living selling movie tickets on the dark web. After selling a ticket to a secret police officer by mistake, he ends up at the Soviet orphanage, where he fakes his identity in order to gain greater authority. Every day for Qodrat, it's all about making new friends, falling in love, getting into mischief, and embarking on new adventures. As the Mujahideens begin the civil war, the orphans' world is transformed inside the walls of their safe haven.
