The Reluctant Astronaut

Roy Fleming, played by Don Knotts, is a small-town kiddie-ride operator with a fear of heights. Roy grudgingly travels to Houston after finding that his father had enrolled him in the space program, only to discover that his position is that of a janitor, not an astronaut. Roy manages to put up a charade of being an astronaut to his family and friends, eager to live up to his dominating father's expectations. Roy has the opportunity to confront his concerns when NASA plans to send a layperson into space to verify the worthiness of a new autonomous spaceship.
