The Seen and Unseen

Tantra and Tantri are inextricably linked. Tantra always takes the whites and Tantri always gets the yolks when they steal eggs from the family's sacrificial gift. The yolk, like Tantra, suddenly vanishes one day. Tantri begins to slide into beautiful parallel worlds, approaching the inevitable farewell through costumes, body paint, and dance, while her brother is dangerously ill and in the hospital. Tantri's mother washes the paint off her face at one point, as if carefully trying to dispel the idea that things can stay the same. Andini tells the story of a ten-year-old girl dealing with parting and grief through protracted dream sequences set against the backdrop of the Balinese philosophy of sekala–the seen–and niskala–the unseen.
