The Silence Before Bach
This latest film from the eccentrically experimental Catalan director Portabella is a gorgeous, occasionally somewhat off-kilter celebration and examination of Bach's place in the contemporary world. Blending historical reconstruction with extremely loosely connected 'dramatic' scenes and documentary segments, the film offers a whimsical, impressionistic succession of variants on the premise that Johann Sebastian's exceptional ear for harmony altered the way the world listens.
