The Story of the Last Chrysanthemum

Kikunosuke Onoue, the adopted son of a famed actor and himself a female character actress, realizes that he is only appreciated for his acting because of his father's heir status in late nineteenth-century Tokyo. Devastated, he seeks comfort from Otoku, a household servant, and the two fall in love. Kikunosuke becomes adamant about leaving home and pursuing a career as an actor on his own terms, and Otoku supports him wholeheartedly.
