The Ugly American
Harrison MacWhite, an erudite and outspoken academic, escapes a difficult Senate confirmation process by conservatives to become ambassador to Sarkan, a Southeast Asian country where civil strife threatens a precarious peace. Despite his experience, MacWhite perceives only a dichotomy between the United States and Communism once he arrives. He refuses to believe that anti-Americanism stems from a desire for independence and nationality. As a result, he abandons his friend Deong, a local opposition leader, disregards a foreman's request to pause the road's construction, and tries to push ahead. What price would the country and his friends be willing to pay for him to grow up?
