The United States of Hoodoo
The film investigates the ways in which spirituality rooted in Africa has permeated American popular culture. Upon reaching the coasts of North America, the ancient African deities underwent transformations. Now, their spirit is manifested in turntable mastery, improvisational talents and mind-blowing collages, performances, and rituals. Traditional and conventional views of race, religion, and rationality are challenged by the film. During interviews with musicians, poets and artists, healers, cooks of gumbo, and Mississippi Blues men, the documentary paints a picture of a culture that has always relied on a unique mix of different ethnic influences to produce its cultural diversity and allure, as well as its vitality and strength.
