When elderly pensioner Umberto Domenico Ferrari returns from a demonstration calling for a hike in suburban pensions to his dressing house, his landlady demands her rent by the month or his end and his dog is going to be turned out onto the street. Unable to receive the money over time, Umberto fakes illness to receive delivered to a hospital, even giving his cherished dog to the landlady's pregnant and left handed maid to get safe keeping.
