Westfront 1918
In the trenches of France, a group of German infantrymen from the First World War live out their lives. They find some respite and entertainment in a village behind enemy lines, but the attacks on and from the French troops ebb and flow, so terror is the predominant emotion in their life. Karl, one of the men, returns home on leave to find his family suffering as a result of the war's privation. He makes it back to the front lines just in time to confront a massive French tank offensive.
