When a Woman Ascends the Stairs
We hear from hostess Keiko on the Ginza, who is 30 years old and a widow. To depict life's cycle, she recounts how she has to look cheery around drunks, dress and live well to appear confident, and must earn enough money to support her demanding mother and brother. In her late twenties, she's at a crossroads. She may either pursue a marriage (which is tough because of her tainted employment), be a "keeper," or take out a loan to open her own bar. It's possible that investors will expect a return on their loans if you go a different path. Attracting men is easy for Keiko, but are the men she is seeing really who they claim to be? Is there a way out for her?
