Casanova
The Italian adventurer and libertine Giovanni Jacopo Casanova lived from 17-25 to 1798, in this show Dennis Potter attempted to locate a contemporary significance through his fundamental themes of religion and sex. He commented that Casanova"was concerned with religious and sexual freedom, and these are what we have to address ourselves to now." Casanova was imprisoned in 1755 in Venice, and Potter used that event being a device, always inter-cutting to contrast Casanova's amorous escapades, radiant, joyful and brightly lit, at the lieu of a cell that was half-darkened using his confinement that was estranged.
