Fawlty Towers is a fictitious hotel that can be found in the beach town of Torquay, which is located on the "English Riviera." The series takes place there. The plots revolve around the tense, rude, and put-upon owner of the hotel, Basil Fawlty, as well as his bossy wife Sybil, a relatively normal chambermaid named Polly, and a hapless Spanish waiter named Manuel, and their attempts to run the hotel in the midst of ridiculous situations and a variety of demanding and peculiar guests. A list of the best British television shows ever compiled by the British Film Institute in 2000 was topped by Fawlty Towers, which was voted by industry insiders.
