Jackie Robinson
When Jack Roosevelt Robinson crossed the color barrier in baseball, he became one of the most cherished figures in American history. Because of his outspoken stance on racial injustice, Robinson alienated many of his former teammates and even some of his own teammates who had formerly praised him for his "turning the other cheek" behavior. Later, when diabetes took its toll on his health and a new generation of leaders pushed the civil rights movement in an increasingly aggressive direction, he found it difficult to remain relevant as an outspoken newspaper columnist, fractious political activist, and ardent civil rights campaigner.
