Maude

Originally airing on the CBS network in the United States from September12, 1972 all the way through April22,1978, Maude is a sitcom that was created in the 1970s. Bea Arthur starred in the role of Maude Findlay, a politically progressive middle-aged woman who is outspoken. She lives in the New York suburb of Tuckahoe with her fourth husband, Walter Findlay, who owns a home appliance company. Maude is married four times. In addition to advocating for civil rights, racial equality, and gender parity, Maude was a staunch supporter of the tenets of women's liberation, voted exclusively for Democratic Party candidates, was an outspoken advocate for the legalization of abortion, and voted consistently for Democratic Party candidates. On the other hand, her personality, which could be described as overbearing and perhaps dominant at times, frequently came in the way of her successfully speaking out on these topics. The show was a spin-off of All in the Family, on which Beatrice Arthur had initially played the part of Maude, Edith Bunker's cousin; like All in the Family, Maude was a sitcom with topical stories written by producer Norman Lear; the character of Edith Bunker was also played by Beatrice Arthur. Several episodes of the show, which were essentially half-hour "two-hander" teleplays, focused solely on the characters of Maude and Walter, which is quite unusual for an American sitcom. Bea Arthur starred in "The Analyst," the fourth season's stand-alone episode, in which she gave a lengthy, introspective monologue to a psychiatrist who was never seen on screen.
