In his San Francisco basement, young genius Quinn Mallory opens the door to an endless number of Earths. During a trial run, Quinn invites coworker Wade Wells and his professor, Professor Maximillian Arturo, to view his new invention. However, a surge in power and an early departure leave all three, along with a jaded soul singer dubbed Rembrandt "Crying Man" Brown, trapped in a parallel universe. Now they must "slide" from world to world, not just adapting to their ever-changing environment but also attempting to return home. Will they reach their destination?
