The Sweeney
The Sweeney is a branch of the Metropolitan Police specialising in handling robbery, really just a 1970s British television police drama focusing on two members of the Flying Squad and violent crime in London. The programme's name derives from Sweeney Todd, that will be Cockney rhyming slang for"Flying Squad".
The programme has been taken on 16mm film by the film division of Thames Television. It aired on ITV between two January 1975 and also 28 December 1978 at the weekday slot with showings at exactly the same time until the 1980s. It starred Dennis Waterman as his partner Detective Sergeant George Carter, and John Thaw as Detective Inspector Jack Regan. Such has been its prevalence in the UK it spawned two theatrically released feature picture spin-offs, Sweeney! and Sweeney 2.
The series aired for its Flying Squad that was real life during a dark period. From the 1970sthe Flying Squad was publicly censured to be engaged with connections with the fraternity, authorities corruption and bribery. Unlike the unwavering high standards seen in the Sweeney, the Flying Squad's true commander, Detective Chief Superintendent Kenneth Drury was convicted of five counts of corruption and jailed for eight years on 7. An internal investigation, called Operation Countryman, was started to stamp out more corruption. A 1 2 officers were detained and more resigned.
